Town firefighters battle their biggest blaze

AMMANFORD firefighters played a key role in battling one of the largest blazes south-west Wales has ever seen over the Easter weekend.

They joined Mid and West Wales Fire Service colleagues in tackling a huge fire at the disused Royal Gate House Hotel, on Tenby seafront, in the early hours of Sunday.

Forty people were moved to safety after the five-storey building was engulfed by flames at around 11pm on Saturday.

The Ammanford crew, equipped with their high-volume pumping unit, responded to an emergency call at 2.30am, after firefighters on the spot were handicapped by poor water supplies.

"This was one of the largest property blazes in west Wales for some time and, for some of our younger members, it was the biggest blaze they'd ever had to tackle," watch manager Valdis Fremanis told the Guardian.

"The pumping unit can give out 8,000 litres of water per minute over a distance of three kilometres.

"The typography of the area made this a difficult fire to fight, but we were lucky that the strong winds and heavy rain forecast didn't really materialise."

The main task of the Ammanford team was to prevent minor fires reigniting and spreading.
