Betws 72 Bynea 7

BYNEA put in a spirited first-half performance but the power and pace of championship-chasing Betws was too much ass they ran in twelve tries to boost their points difference, which could end up deciding the title.

The hosts dominated the scrums from the start but a scrappy first half performance with numerous turnovers limited the scoring opportunities.

However they took the lead after ten minutes when outside-half Phil Saunders made a typical break wih centre Gavin Davies powering through to score.

The visitors hit back immediately when a spilled ball in midfield was seized by flanker Andrew Pegler who sprinted clear to score a converted try.

Man of the match Glyn Thomas was instrumental in regaining the lead when he again pounced on the visiting No 8 at another retreating scrum to rip the ball and supply Davies with his second try, again converted by Saunders.

Davies made another scintillating break but was unfortunately injured in the process before putting Saunders clear to secure the try and conversion to give his side a 19-7 half-time lead.

In the second half the hosts stepped up a gear and with the wind at their backs, brother Gary Davies took over from Gavin to keep up the pressure in the centre.

From the first minute with flanker Thomas winning the lineout and powerful No 8 Dan Howells standing out in midfield to create the opening for sub Davies to score it looked ominious for lowly visitors Bynea.

The homesters continued to show their superiority from this point on with strong-running Davies creating a hat-trick of tries for wing Mark Thomas.

Davies added a further try and outstanding scrum-half Dylan Rees was also rewarded for his support play with a score.

Full-back Matthew Rees and wing forward Gavin Thomas also crossed and Saunders added a number of long-range drop goal conversions as Betws put in an impressive second half performance to keep the pressure on Ystradgynlais.

This Saturday, Betws have a difficult away fixture against Pontardawe, who have strengthened their squad since the start of the season.
